The Nia Project KC

Founded in 2020 by Terri E. Barnes, The Nia Project KC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the perception, outcomes, and norms for Black girls and women in Kansas City, Missouri. The organization's name is rooted in Nia, the fifth principle of Kwanzaa meaning Purpose. Programs include Black Women Get Fit, a signature annual health and wellness event bringing together Black women with fitness instructors, health experts, stress reduction specialists, financial coaches, and Black women-owned businesses; Beloved! Summer School providing academic enrichment for girls; Beloved Boutique offering clothing resources; and the R.O.A.R. (Read Often and Rise) literacy program. The Nia Project also administers scholarships and grants to Black women and girls, hosts an annual Nonprofit Symposium connecting Black-led organizations, and maintains a Black Nonprofit Resource Directory amplifying mission-aligned Kansas City organizations.
