D.C. residents with disabilities can apply for two federal disability programs through the Social Security Administration (SSA): Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), which provides monthly payments to adults with a work history who can no longer work due to a medical condition, and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which provides payments to low-income individuals who are disabled, blind, or age 65 and older regardless of work history. SSI recipients in D.C. automatically qualify for Medicaid. Applications for SSDI can be completed online at SSA.gov. SSI applications must be completed in person or by phone. D.C. has three SSA field offices located in Anacostia, Postal Plaza, and downtown Washington D.C. Medical determinations are processed through D.C.'s Disability Determination Division (DDD), administered by the Department on Disability Services, located at 1125 15th Street NW, Washington DC 20005. D.C. residents may also access vocational rehabilitation and independent living services through the Department on Disability Services.
