Black Women Thriving East of the River (BWTEotR) is a Washington D.C.-based nonprofit dedicated to empowering Black women in Wards 7 and 8 — two of the District's most economically and medically underserved communities. The organization works across two primary focus areas. Workforce Development equips Black women with training, career coaching, and support to enter and advance in the healthcare field, while also promoting anti-racism and DEI practices among D.C. employers. A Healthcare Scholarship Program helps women overcome financial barriers to entering health careers requiring advanced training, licensing, or certification. Patient Navigation focuses on reducing cancer mortality rates among Black women through better access to cancer care, patient advocacy, and a Cancer Patient Bill of Rights. BWTEotR partners with local leaders, community members, and funders including the Meyer Foundation and the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region to drive systemic change. The organization serves Black women residing in Wards 7 and 8 of Washington D.C.
